Need to Remove a Tree?
Removing a large tree is a difficult and dangerous undertaking. Even though it’s typically advised to hire a tree expert, there are a few situations where you could feel obligated to handle the task yourself. However, you must first decide if hiring an arborist is the best course of action or if you can remove it yourself. Follow these guidelines to ensure a successful and secure residential tree removal:
Cleaning Up the Space
Make sure to clear the area from everyone and anything before starting to cut. With this, you may make sure that no branches or sections of the tree’s trunk fall and cause mishaps, injuries, or property damage. All vehicles, lawn ornaments, equipment, etc. should be removed from the area before the event. Pets and kids need to be kept secure.
Removing Lower Branches
Lower branches should be cut using a chainsaw because they are larger and heavier than the upper ones. To start the removal of these lower branches, chop them off. As you are cutting them off, try to prevent them from dropping by using a rope. To properly cut these branches, first, make an undercut by cutting upward from the underside of the branch, and then saw the branch through by about a quarter of the way.
Removing Upper Branches
Similar to how you would cut off the lower branches, use a reciprocating saw to remove the higher branches. Prior to doing so, take care to set up a tripod ladder or secure your extension ladder to the tree with a rope. Carry the saw with a rope rather than climbing the tree while holding it in your hands.
Taking the Trunk Apart
Once all of the branches have been taken out, the trunk will be cut out using a chainsaw. Cut a right-angle notch in the tree’s trunk using it, making sure to position it in the direction you want the branch to fall. If the trunk is too big to fall safely in one piece, cut it up. In light of this, climb the ladder to the notch, then locate a location that is 10 feet above the ground and cut the trunk there.
Cutting the Stump
After you’re done with the tree, cut the stump out of the ground or anywhere nearby using a chainsaw. It can be difficult to remove the stump and its root system. If the stump isn’t causing too many problems, use a stump killer on it and let decay take its place. Additionally, stump grinders will prevent it from sprouting new branches.
